Spain’s own traditions
- Sant Jordi (April 23): in Catalonia, the biggest day of the year for rose sales. A red rose and a book are given.
- Mother’s Day (first Sunday of May): unlike Mexico or most of the Americas, Spain celebrates it on the first Sunday, in the month Catholic tradition dedicates to the Virgin Mary.
- Father’s Day (March 19): Saint Joseph’s Day. Sunflowers and plants are gaining ground over the tie.
- All Saints’ Day (November 1): families visit cemeteries with chrysanthemums. That’s why in Spain chrysanthemums aren’t given as flowers for the home.
- Teachers’ Day (November 27): Saint Joseph Calasanz.
There are also big festivals with flowers that aren’t about giving them to people: the Fallas Flower Offering in Valencia (March 17 and 18), the May Crosses and the Córdoba Patios Festival in May, or the flower in the hair at Seville’s April Fair.
The trends arriving from Latin America
Thanks to TikTok, the “color” dates born on the other side of the Atlantic are increasingly seen in Spain: yellow flowers on September 21, blue flowers for Boyfriend Day on October 3 and purple flowers on November 9, which in Spain is something of a homecoming: the song that inspires it, “Un ramito de violetas”, is by the Spanish singer-songwriter Cecilia.
