Amor y Amistad, Colombia’s Valentine’s Day
Colombia has celebrated lovers and friends on the third Saturday of September since the 1960s. It is one of the biggest retail dates of the year: roses for your partner, sunflowers and small gifts for friends, and the “secret friend” game in offices, schools and groups of friends. Because the dates are so close, in Colombia the yellow flowers trend of September 21 arrives almost at the same time. - Second Sunday of May: Mother’s Day, the biggest date of the year for flower sales along with Amor y Amistad.
- May 15: Teachers’ Day, for Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

- November 9 (and the October 9 variant): purple flowers.
A country of flowers
Colombia is one of the world’s largest flower exporters: many of the roses and carnations sold in the US on February 14 come from the greenhouses of the Bogotá savanna and eastern Antioquia. The altitude of the Andes, the steady light of the equatorial zone and the mild temperatures make it possible to grow flowers all year round. In August, Medellín celebrates it with the Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival) and its Silleteros Parade, farmers from Santa Elena who carry huge flower arrangements on their backs. Flowers in season in Colombia
Because of its high-altitude equatorial climate, Colombia has no marked seasons: roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias, hydrangeas and gerberas are fresh and well priced all twelve months. It is one of the few places where almost any flower is always “in season”.
