Father’s Day on the third Sunday of June is celebrated in almost all of the Americas. Weddings, graduations and the end of the school year
In Spain and much of the northern hemisphere, June is the month of weddings and graduations. For a graduation, a small bouquet of sunflowers or yellow or orange roses conveys joy and admiration and is easy to carry during the ceremony. As a wedding guest, it’s not usual to bring flowers but rather a gift, but an arrangement sent to the couple’s home a few days later is a lovely touch.
The end of the school year is another occasion: many students say goodbye to their teacher with a flower or a plant, just like on Teachers’ Day. And on Saint John’s Eve, the 23rd, in some parts of Spain people gather herbs and flowers to make Saint John’s water.

In Colombia, Ecuador and the Andes, the high-altitude climate lets growers produce roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias and hydrangeas all year round: that is why they are two of the world’s largest flower exporters. In Spain it is the month of hydrangeas, which start blooming in the gardens of the north, of lavender, of daisies and of the last peonies. The first summer sunflowers arrive. In Mexico there are plenty of sunflowers, gladioli and highly fragrant tuberoses. In Argentina, Chile and Uruguay it is winter: camellias, calla lilies and greenhouse flowers such as alstroemeria and carnations.
What to give in June
- For your father: sunflowers, a bouquet of blue hydrangeas with eucalyptus or a plant for his home or office.
- For a graduate: sunflowers or yellow roses.
- For a couple celebrating: white and pink hydrangeas, very wedding-like.
- For yourself: a bunch of fresh lavender, which you can then dry to scent your wardrobe.
Tips for the month
In the heat, cut flowers last less. Change the water every day, use fresh water and put the vase in the coolest part of the house. Hydrangeas drink a lot, and through their petals too: if they wilt, submerge the heads in fresh water for half an hour and they come back to life.
