September 21 is yellow flowers day: in Floricienta, the 2004 Argentine series, the heroine dreamed of someone giving her yellow flowers, and in 2021 TikTok turned the song into a tradition to welcome spring in the southern hemisphere. Today it is one of the busiest weeks for flower shops across Latin America, and increasingly in Spain too. Social media also shares the chain of the 22nd, 23rd and 24th for cousins, mothers and best friends.
In Colombia, the third Saturday of the month is Amor y Amistad, its Valentine’s Day, with roses, sunflowers and secret friend. Other dates by country:

In Colombia, Ecuador and the Andes, the high-altitude climate lets growers produce roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias and hydrangeas all year round: that is why they are two of the world’s largest flower exporters. This table is a guide: the season changes with the area and the year, and greenhouses extend almost all of them.
In Spain summer says goodbye with dahlias, sunflowers, asters and a second bloom of roses; at the end of the month the first chrysanthemums appear. In Mexico dahlias and sunflowers carry on, and at the end of the month the cempasúchil fields begin. In Argentina, Chile and Uruguay spring arrives: fragrant freesias, tulips, ranunculus, daffodils and lilacs. The sunflowers for the 21st, however, still come from greenhouses.

If you’re giving sunflowers on the 21st, order them three or four days ahead: on the day itself they sell out or go up in price. Find a tall, heavy vase, because the heads are very heavy, and change the water often: sunflowers drink a lot.
